Who is Eligible for KanCare?
KanCare is the state of Kansas’ Medicaid program. A government Medicaid program that is no-cost or low-cost health care for the residents of Kansas.
There are several Medicaid programs for different Kansas residents. In order to get Medicaid, you must be a Kansan who, along with income limits, meet one of the following criteria:
- A child under the age of 19
- A pregnant person
- An adult with children or a caregiver
- Elderly or disabled
- A refugee during the first eight months of arriving to the United States
While Medicaid is only for people who are US citizens or meet immigration guidelines; people can apply for family members like children. Social security numbers are not required for people applying on behalf of family members; but social security numbers are required for those applying on behalf of themselves.
Insurance coverage for children under the age of 19, also called Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). KanCare is available for families in some income categories.
One of the parts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is the expansion of Medicaid eligibility to nearly all low-income individuals with incomes at or below 138% of poverty. This expansion was optional for states and Kansas chose not to expand Medicaid. Making it that much more difficult for Kansans to get Medicaid.
This low-income limitations with Kansas and the high cost of market place health insurance, has created a “coverage gap” of individuals who cannot afford healthcare.
Just remember Kansas Medicaid or KanCare covers people with limited income, which may include pregnant women, children up to age 19, adult caretaker of children, persons with disabilities and senior citizens to name a few.
