What is Typically Covered in a Long-Term Care Policy?
The exact type of coverage varies by insurance policy, but long-term care coverage usually covers, home health care, respite care, adult day care centers, assisted living facilities, nursing homes and Alzheimer special care facilities.
A few long-term care policies may also cover short-term hospice care.
Home health care can be skilled in-home nursing care, such as occupational, speech, physical and rehabilitation therapy; and can help with daily activities such as bathing and eating.
Another type of care covered in a long-term care policy is respite care. This is a type of temporary care at home or in an adult day care or nursing home. It’s meant to last only a few weeks out of the year and provides relief to the primary caregiver.
Assisted living facilities are often covered in long-term policies and provide personalized care to older adults, in a residential setting. Their services may include medication management, assistance with using the bathroom, dressing and grooming; housekeeping, meals, laundry and transpiration services.
Long-term care policies typically cover a comprehensive array of care in either your home or at a specialized facility, but does not typically include medical care.
Most states even have a long-term policy they call a partnership program to encourage people to plan for long-term care. These policies tend to offer certain quality standards, such as providing cost-of-living adjustments for benefits to protect against inflation.
