What Is Long Term Care Insurance?

A long term care insurance policy helps cover the costs of care when you have a chronic medical condition, disability or a disorder such as Alzheimer’s. Regular health insurance doesn’t cover long term care.

Long term care can be given in a number of locations such as your home, a nursing home, an assisted living facility or even an adult day care center. It’s best to consider long term care if you are in your mid-50’s or older. Waiting until it’s needed, is not an option. You won’t be able to qualify for the coverage if you already have a debilitating condition.

Whether you need long term care insurance is a choice for you to consider based on your situation and preferences. You get to choose the amount of coverage you want. Policies usually cap the amount paid out per day and the amount paid during your lifetime. Data suggests women typically need care for an average of 3-4 years; while men require long term care for right at two years.

Under most long term care insurance policies, you’re eligible for benefits when you can’t do at least two of the six daily living activities on your own. Daily activities include bathing, dressing, eating, caring for incontinence, toileting or transferring from a bed to a chair. There are exceptions to the daily living activities if you suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairment.
