What Does Long Term Health Care Insurance Cover?

Long term health care insurance helps people pay for a variety of services and typically does not include medical care. Coverage may include the expense of staying in a nursing home or assisted living facility, adult care or event in-home care.

This typically includes care provided by nurses for physical, occupational or speech therapies, along with helping with the day-to-day activities; like bathing, dressing or getting in and out of the bed.

With most long-term care policies, you become eligible for benefits when you can not do two of the six main “activities of daily living” on your own. These activities include:

  • Bathing
  • Caring for incontinence
  • Dressing
  • Eating
  • Getting on or off the toilet
  • Getting in and out of bed or a chair

It generally pays for the general effects of aging. Long term care insurance is designed to help cover the costs of custodial or personal care and care for chronic illness, disability or injury.

Also, long term care insurance may also cover short-term hospice care for people who are terminally ill. With hospice care covered, it typically helps with pain management, physical support and to provide emotional support, too all involved.

While long term care does not cover medical care, it also does not cover pre-existing medical conditions. You may not be eligible for pre-existing conditions until after a specific set amount of time.

You may have a hard time believing you’ll need help taking care of yourself someday, but chances are you’ll need it at some point in your life.
