Medicare Open Enrollment

Medicare Open enrollment for 2024 is open until January 16. Why the extra day? January 15 is a federal holiday as we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Every year, open enrollment allows you to review your Medicare health insurance coverage. January 16th will be the last day to enroll in or change health plans for the year. After this date, you can enroll in or change plans only if you qualify for a special enrollment period.

A special enrollment period is due to a recent life event like losing coverage, moving, getting married or even having a baby.

Choosing health insurance coverage doesn’t have to be difficult. You need to know:

  • How your insurance plans share costs; what do you pay and what does the insurance pay.
  • You’ll pay a monthly fee to your insurance company, called a premium, every month; regardless of whether or not you use them.
  • Whether you want an HMO, PPO, POS or EPO. These plans dictate the doctors you use along with the facility of care.

Understanding your needs and what your costs will be will help you determine what health care plan you want to have. Also, knowing this will allow you to lock in your coverage by the January 16th deadline.

It’s always a good idea to check your coverage every year even if you decide to stay with the same plan; because health care plans change frequently and offerings with plans change as well. You may be able to get better coverage at a lower cost than you did the year before.
