How to Choose a Medicare Supplement Plan

Choosing a Medicare supplement plan can be stressful. One way to get the most out of your search is to identify all the essentials you may want and think long term and what you might need down the road. Here are a few do’s and don’ts on what to do when looking for a Medicare supplement plan.

  • DO: Carefully review the specifics of all the different plans.
  • DON’T: listen to only your friends and advertising.
  • DO: Keep in mind the deadlines. You don’t automatically get signed up.
  • DON’T: put it off thinking you can do it whenever. Beware of the penalties for not signing up when you first become eligible.
  • DO: pick a prescription drug plan that works with the medications you take and the price for each.
  • DON’T: just pick the lowest costing plan.
  • DO: review the acceptable doctors list and make sure your current doctor is listed.
  • DON’T: just pick any plan based on the costs. Some doctors do not accept Medicare and you want to be sure your doctor is in-network.

Make sure that you carefully review all the Medicare supplement plans before signing up. Not all coverage plans are the same and you’ll want the plan that covers all your doctors and medication and future potential needs.
