What Does Part A and Part B Mean, and Do I Need Them?

Medicare Part A and Part B are two different types of coverage. You’ll have to decide for yourself what best suites your health needs.

Medicare Part A covers inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and home health care.

Medicare Part B helps cover services from doctors and other health care providers, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds and other equipment) and many preventive services (like screenings, shots or vaccines and yearly wellness visits).  

When you first enroll in Medicare (and during certain times of the year), you can choose how you get your Medicare coverage. You have two main ways to get Medicare:

• Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)
• Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C)

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. One can join a separate Medicare drug coverage (Part D). Use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the US.

Medicare Advantage is a Medicare-approved plan from a private company that offers an alternative to Original Medicare for your health and drug coverage. These plans typically have doctors in their coverage plans and can have varying degrees of coverage (like vision, hearing and dental).

Medicare is a national health insurance program available to individuals age 65 or older (younger individuals with disabilities and people with end-stage renal disease) can qualify for Medicare.
