Medicare and Medicaid, National Health Insurance Program In The United States.

What Are the Key Differences Between Medicare and Medicaid?

Both Medicare and Medicaid are health care programs that provide government assistance to people in need of health care support. And that is where many of the similarities end.

Medicare is available for people 65 years or older or those who qualify for disability or end-stage renal disease.

Medicaid availability varies from state to state. It also depends on household size, income or disability.

Those who qualify for Medicare coverage have the option of choosing from four parts. Part A covers hospitals services, Part B covers medical services, Part C coverage by approved private companies and Part D covers prescription drugs. Qualifiers can also choose a combination of any of the parts. For example, you may want Part A and Part B another may want Part C only. The choice is up to the qualifier.

Those who qualify for Medicaid vary by state, but all states are required to cover certain services including inpatient and outpatient hospital services, x-ray services, laboratory, physician services, nursing facility services and more.

You can apply for Medicare during open enrollment November 1 to December 15. If you are just turning 65, you can apply during the Enrollment Period. This lasts for seven months starting at 3 months before you turn 65, and ending 3 months after the month you turn 65.

Enrolment for Medicaid is any time of year. Just contact your state Medicaid agency to receive an application.
