I Want to Change Medicare Plans, Now What?

There are three enrollment periods when you can change Medicare plans. You cannot switch Medicare plans at any time, you have to choose one of the three enrollment periods only.

The first enrollment period to change Medicare plans is during your initial enrollment period. This is generally lasting for seven months: three months before you birth month, your birth month and three months after you birth month. If you receive Medicare based on a disability, your three months before you 25th month of receiving disability benefits, your 25th month of receiving disability benefits and the three months after receiving disability benefits. During these seven months, you can change Medicare plans.

Medicare open enrollment, or second enrollment option, occurs October 15 to December 7 every year. If you are changing Medicare plans, you can do so during the open enrollment period. If you want to change Medicare plans from Medicare part A to Medicare part B, you can do this during open enrollment.

Medicare Advantage Open enrollment occurs January 1 to March 31. This third enrollment period is specifically for Medicare Advantage Plans. If you are already enrolled in an MA plan and you want to switch to another MA plan, you can do so during this open enrollment.

This may seem a little overwhelming, so it’s easier to sit down with a live human and go over changing Medicare plans rather than calling the 1-800 number. Just remember you can change Medicare Plans during any of these three enrollment periods.
